Welcome everyone to the review of the 2015 Southport Coast Links Championship

174 excited players registered on Day 1 at Formby Golf Club ready to play one of Britains finest courses. On the whole the weather was very kind to us with long spells of sunshine. Each player that came in commented on the whole experience of playing such a great course in superb condition with a few golfers saying it was the best course they have ever played.

The benign conditions showed in the scores with 74 players over 30 points, and an incredible 37 2s

Peter Crockford & Tony Whitehouse both recorded 40 points with the latter taking 2nd place on a card play-off. Taking the spoils on day 1 with a superb score of 41 points was Nicholas Hartley booking his place at Royal Birkdale

A much tougher day awaited the early starters on Day 2 at Hesketh, with wind and a touch of rain. Hesketh has hosted many Open Qualifiers & in 2008 World Boys championship in which a certain Jordan Spieth finished 2nd. All the field enjoyed the layout.

Once again the scores were very impressive with 92 scores over 30 points and 30 plus 2s. Third place with 38 points was Carl Bartle, Nigel Hughes with 39 points just being pipped to first Place by fellow North Wales member James Moran on 40 points, also securing his place at Birkdale

Last year at West Lancashire we had winds of up to  70 miles per hour, the players arriving in the morning this year had sunshine and very little wind, most unusual for West Lancs. I have to say none of the morning playing really took advantage of this and when the wind picked up in the afternoon the good scores were posted. Once again we had over 30 2s and 75 players over 30 points which for a course as difficult as West Lancs is quite an achievement so well done everyone. Three players tied the top on 39 points, Andre Hogan  in third, with Nicholas Hartley second and Norman Dunn winning the day on a card play and making Royal Birkdale. This course is ranked 47th in England & 79th in Britain and normally in first class condition, but greens had recently been vandalisided, which was a shame. They now have a new green keeper and sure next year will be much improved

Early starters at Hillside on day 4 did not have the best of the weather as at West Lancs, some really heavy rain welcomed the players. The afternoon was a complete op post with beautiful sunshine, perfect condition to play this superb golf course. After nearly 100 2s in three days I asked the green keeper to make par 3s a little bit tougher, this worked on the amount of 2s but did not stop the first Hole In One in the Championship history by Carl Bartle on one of the finest pars 3s, 10th hole. A beautiful struck 6 iron I was told one bounce and straight in. A massive well done Carl. The comments from the players coming in ranged from best back 9 in Britain to best course in the world, every player was full of praise for this great course. Each day so far we had averaged over 70 scores in 30s, we still had 49 in the 30s but think that shows what a true test it was and with a few nerves with it being final day to reach Royal Birkdale. Again like West Lancs we had a three way tie for first place on 36 points with Graham Woods in 3rd place and Alan Weaser just missing out on top spot to Mr Hole In One Carl Bartle, making it a great treble with his place at Birkdale also secured. After a very late finish at Hillside we now new the finalists for Royal Birkdale. Even though it is about finishing in the top 8 or winning a day to reach the final, a special mention must go to Keith Turner who topped qualifying with a very impressive 142 points, very consistent, so well done Keith !

The conditions for the 12 finalists at Royal Birkdale on Friday was great sunshine, very little wind, and a championship course in great condition. The competition was very close, just 2 shots separating top 5. Third place on card play off was Shaine Baines 33 points, also on 33 points in second was Tim Page, but the winner of The Southport Coast Links Championship 2015 on 34 points was Tim Lloyd (Puttenham Golf Club). Amazing finish from Tim playing last 5 holes in 2 under par, well done Tim, see you in 2016 to defend your title

All the none qualifiers played Southport & Ainsdale also in great weather & condition, with the R&A Boys Amateur there the following week, the close scores continued with another three way tie at the top on 38 points. Elliot Clark taking 3rd with Mathew Clarkson just pipped to first place by Jenny Readman, our First Lady winner in the championship. Well done Jenny !
